Live edge, joined, veneered: how to tell what you are buying

Three tables can look identical in a photograph and be worth three different amounts. Here is where to look.

Photograph a single slab, a top jointed from four boards, and a veneer over chipboard. Crop all three to the same rectangle and at listing size they are hard to separate. The wording will not separate them either — all three are sold as live edge, and the phrase is honestly used of all three. What separates them is the edge, the end and the underside.

The three things being compared

They are not three grades of one object. They are three constructions that arrive at the same silhouette, and the difference between them is structural rather than cosmetic.

A single slab

One width of one trunk. The board is cut lengthways through the tree, so the two long sides of the finished top are the tree’s own outline — the contour that sat under the bark, sanded and sealed but never redrawn — and there is no join anywhere in the surface. Its width is whatever the trunk was, which is the whole economics of it: a slab that seats six has to come from a tree wide enough to seat six.

A joined top

Several solid boards, jointed edge to edge along their length and glued into one panel — solid hardwood the whole way down, the same timber at the surface as underneath. It can still be a live-edge table: the two outer boards keep their own natural edges, so the tree’s line runs down both long sides and the glue lines sit between the boards in the middle. Most wide tops in the world are made this way.

A veneer

A slice of real wood, generally under a millimetre thick, pressed onto a core of MDF or chipboard. The wood is genuine; that is not the objection. The objection is that it is a skin — the board beneath carries the weight, meets the water and decides how the table ends. A veneered top can be given a live edge too, usually with a shaped solid lipping round the perimeter, which is why the phrase settles nothing.

“Live edge” describes the edge, and nothing else

This is the confusion the whole category runs on. Live edge is a description of the two long sides — the tree’s own contour, or a straight saw cut. It is not a description of how many pieces the top is made from. So ask the two questions separately: is the edge the tree’s own, and how many pieces is the top? A listing that answers only the first has answered the cheaper of the two.

How to tell in a photograph

Most of this decision gets made on a screen, so start there. Four things give it away — and then a fifth that settles it.

  • Grain across the width. On a slab the figure runs continuously from one live edge to the other, and the two edges never mirror each other, because a tree is not symmetrical. On a jointed top the pattern restarts at intervals — each board is its own piece of tree, so colour, figure and sapwood change at every seam. Book-matched boards reflect across the join like an inkblot: handsome, and a tell.
  • Repetition between listings. Look at the seller’s other tables. If six tops carry the same figure in the same places, that figure is not a tree’s. A slab cannot be repeated, which is why anyone selling slabs photographs each one separately.
  • The edge profile. A solid top’s edge is wood in section: the surface figure turns the corner and carries on down it. A veneer shows a band instead — a lip of even thickness and slightly different colour running round the perimeter.
  • The underside. A solid top’s underside is the same timber as its face; a veneered one usually carries a plain backing sheet with no figure at all. If no photograph shows the underside or the short end, that absence is itself information.

Then there is the end grain, which is the one place a veneer cannot fake. The short end of a solid top shows the growth rings turning through its full thickness — an arc of the tree seen in section. A veneered end shows a flat face with edging round it, and wherever that edging stops the core appears: even, grainless, no rings in it anywhere. A growth ring cannot be pressed through a millimetre of skin. Ask for that photograph if the listing has not published one.

How to tell with your hands

Set a glass down. Solid timber answers with a low, short knock that dies in the wood. A board core gives a flatter, more even note that carries further. One comparison teaches it, and then you have it for life.

Follow the figure over the edge. Find a knot or a swirl near the long side and see whether the same mark arrives on the edge below it. On a solid top it has to — it is one piece of wood. On a veneer the top and the edge are two separate pieces and the pattern stops dead at the line where they meet.

Ignore the weight. It is the least reliable test of the lot: MDF is dense stuff, and a large veneered top can be every bit the two-person lift a solid one is. Then ask outright.

The answer to “how many boards is the top?” takes one sentence. The pause before it takes longer.

Twenty years in

The interesting question is not how the three compare new, but how they compare after the first chip, the first dry winter, and the first time somebody considers sanding the whole thing back.

Chipped. On a solid top — slab or jointed, no difference here — the damage exposes more of the same timber, the same colour, all the way down. Fill it, sand it flat and seal it again, or leave it and let it join the record. On a veneer the chip goes through the skin and the core appears: a pale, grainless patch that cannot be sanded away, because sanding removes what little wood is left.

Dried out. Solid wood never stops being wood; it takes on and gives up moisture with the seasons, and a top dried carelessly says so within a year. Kiln drying before the timber is worked and sealing every face afterwards slows that exchange to a crawl — the reason the whole care routine here is a damp cloth. On a jointed top, watch the glue lines: a good joint outlasts the wood either side of it, a bad one opens in the first winter. On a chipboard core, water past the skin swells the board, and it does not come back.

Sanded. The whole difference, stated as one fact. A solid top can be sanded back and refinished as often as its life requires — thirty years from now, by somebody who has never heard of us. A veneer cannot be refinished at all. There is under a millimetre of wood there, and abrasive paper takes that in a single pass.

Which of ours are one slab, and which are not

Here is the part that costs us something. The headline claim in this catalogue is one slab, and across most of it that is exactly true — but not across all of it. Rather than word that carefully and hope nobody checks, the construction of every piece is recorded in the catalogue and printed on its own product page. Why oak and walnut arrive as boards

Width is the whole of it. Suar — Samanea saman, the rain tree, also sold as monkey pod, raintree or albizia — grows wide, and it is one of the few timbers that will give a full dining top from a single width. That is why it anchors this collection and why the Suar tables carry the one-slab claim without qualification.

Oak and walnut do not. An oak butt wide enough to dine on is a rare thing, and walnut rarely gives a slab wide enough at all. That leaves two options: joint boards, or offer no oak and no walnut table. The oak tables and the walnut tables here take the first and say so on the page — the only version of this that survives a buyer looking closely.

The two oak tables make the trade visible, because everything else about them matches: same species, same sealed finish, same blackened steel frame, each offered in one fixed size. The gap between those two numbers is not craft, finish or hardware. It is the width of the tree.

One of those reasons gets asked about more than the rest. A river table is two live-edge lengths drawn apart around a channel of resin — it could not be one slab and still be a river table. Whether the resin lasts is a separate question with its own article.

None of this argues that a jointed top is second best. It argues that you should know which of the three you are buying, and that the answer should arrive without you having to work for it.

Is a joined dining table worse than a single slab?

No — it is a different thing, priced differently. A jointed top is solid hardwood the whole way down, can be sanded and refinished decades from now, and is how most fine furniture has been built for centuries. What a slab gives that it cannot is continuity: one width of one tree, the figure unbroken from edge to edge. That is rare at dining width, and the rarity is most of the price difference.

How can I tell if a table is veneer or solid wood?

Look at the short end. Solid wood shows end grain there — the growth rings turning through the full thickness of the top. A veneer shows a flat face with a band of edging round it, and the board underneath is an even colour with no figure in it. Second test: see whether a swirl on the top surface carries on down the edge. On a solid top it must; on a veneer the two faces are separate pieces of wood and the pattern stops at the line.

Does a live edge mean the table is one slab?

It does not. Live edge describes the two long sides — whether they are the tree’s own contour or a straight saw cut — and says nothing about how many pieces the top is made from. Can a veneered table be refinished?

Not meaningfully. The wood on a veneered top is a slice under a millimetre thick, so there is nothing to sand back into — one pass with abrasive paper reaches the board beneath, and once a chip goes through the skin the core shows and keeps showing. A solid top, slab or jointed, carries the same timber through its full thickness, so a mark can be sanded out and the finish laid back on.
