It depends entirely on what is under the finish. A high-street “live edge look” table — joined acacia boards or veneer over board — tends to land between £400 and £900. Solid joined-board hardwood from an independent workshop typically runs £1,000 to £2,500. A genuine wide single-slab hardwood top sits at the top of the market, usually £2,000 to £5,000 depending on species, width and figure. Do live edge tables crack or warp?

Solid wood never stops being wood — it takes on and gives up moisture with the seasons, and a slab that was dried carelessly will tell you about it within a year. Ours are kiln-dried to furniture moisture content before they are ever worked, then sealed on every face, which slows that seasonal exchange to a crawl. Natural checks in the grain are stabilised rather than disguised. Grant the table one courtesy in return: keep it off a radiator and out of relentless direct sun.

How are the live edges themselves finished?

The bark comes off — it would never survive a dining room — and the contour beneath is sanded through the same grits as the surface, then sealed with the same PU and melamine finish as the top. What wood is best for a live edge table?

Each timber argues a different case. Suar grows wide enough to give a full dining top from one slab, with the most dramatic figuring of the three — amber hearts feathering into pale sapwood. Oak is paler and quieter, its grain running straight and even. Walnut is the darkest and most formal, deep chocolate cut with near-black banding. There is no wrong answer: choose the grain you want to look at for the next few decades.

Are live edge tables practical for families?
